Today is the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which is the traditional Chinese folk festival - Dragon Boat Festival. The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the oldest traditional festivals of the Chinese nation. On this day, people must do three activities: dragon boat racing, eating rice dumplings, and drinking realgar wine, all of which are derived from commemorating the patriotic poet Qu Yuan.
Qu Yuan was a minister of King Huai of Chu during the Spring and Autumn Period. During his exile, he could not bear to abandon his motherland because he saw it being invaded. So on May 5th, he wrote his last poem "Huai Sha" and then threw himself into the river with a stone. According to legend, after his death, people went to the river to row boats to look for him. Some fishermen took out the food they prepared for him and threw it into the river, saying that the fish, lobsters and crabs would not bite Qu Yuan after they were full.
